Charmed No Longer

February 21, 2011

John Allan

There is a song in many song books with the title “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” The words were written by Isaac Watts and the song was published in 1707. In this writer’s opinion it is a beautiful song.

Like many songs in song books there are words that are easy on the ear but challenging for the heart. One of the stanzas of that song that stands out to me the most includes the words “All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood.”

Some things are very easy to give up to live the Christian life. Ask any Christian if they still behave the same way they did before they obeyed the gospel and they will tell you they do not. Things have changed. But the lyrics quoted above go deeper than putting off the easy and obvious things a Christian must set aside. They speak of putting away the things that are hard for us to give up; the things that are especially appealing and enticing to us.

That is much more difficult.

If you have ever sung this song then you have presumably sung those words (I suppose it’s possible you sang the song but skipped that stanza or simply did not sing those particular words). Have you thought about what they mean? Are you willing to do what your singing committed you to doing?

Things that are enticing to me might not be enticing to you. Things that are hard for me to give up might be one of those things that were incredibly easy for you to leave behind, and vice-versa. This song calls Christians to lay aside everything that hinders us from Christ; Let us renew the challenge to ourselves to put the Lord Jesus Christ first in our lives.
